What is on offer

estimatetax.net provides tax calculators and reference content free of charge, with no account required. You may use them for personal or professional purposes without asking permission and without payment.

The calculators produce estimates for planning. They are not tax advice and do not create a professional relationship — the disclaimer page sets out what that means and where the boundary is, and it applies to everything here.

There is no uptime commitment and no guarantee that any particular calculator will continue to exist. Tools are added and occasionally retired, and figures are updated as their sources change.

We may change these terms. Material changes will be dated on this page rather than applied silently, on the same principle as everything else on the site.

What you may and may not do

You may use the calculators as much as you like, link to any page, quote figures with attribution, embed the widget on your own site under the terms below, and use the API within its published limits.

You may not scrape the site at a rate that degrades it for others, present the calculators or their output as your own work or as the output of a tax authority, remove or obscure the attribution from an embedded widget, or represent that you are affiliated with or endorsed by estimatetax.net.

You may not use anything here to provide tax advice to others while representing that a professional has reviewed it. Nobody licensed has reviewed the tax logic, that is stated on the editorial policy page, and passing our output on as professionally reviewed misrepresents it.

Automated access is fine within the rate limits. Circumventing them, or distributing access in a way designed to circumvent them, is not.

Embedding the widget

The embeddable calculator is free to use on any site, commercial or not, with no volume limit and no registration.

The condition is attribution: the widget carries a visible link back to estimatetax.net and that link must not be removed, hidden, obscured by overlay, or made non-functional. That link is the whole of what we ask in return.

The widget is served from our domain in an iframe, which means it updates when the underlying tax data does. You are not embedding a snapshot — a rate change reaches your visitors without you doing anything, which is the main reason to embed rather than copy.

We may change or discontinue the widget. If a widget you rely on is being retired, the changelog will record it, and an embedded iframe that stops resolving fails visibly rather than showing stale figures — which for tax data is the correct failure mode.

Do not modify the widget's output before displaying it. Presenting an altered figure inside our frame, or alongside our attribution, misattributes it.

Using the API

The calculation API is documented on its own page and is currently open without a key, subject to a per-address rate limit. It is provided on the same basis as the rest of the site: without warranty, as an estimate, and not as tax advice.

Responses include the source and verification date for every figure used. If you display our figures to your own users, displaying that provenance alongside them is expected — it is the property that makes the data worth using rather than merely available.

Caching responses is encouraged; the endpoint sets cache headers accordingly. Re-requesting an identical calculation repeatedly is wasteful rather than prohibited, but it will meet the rate limit.

Higher volumes, guaranteed availability or a commercial arrangement are what the business page is for. The open endpoint has no availability commitment and may change.

We may introduce keys, quotas or pricing. Any such change will be announced on the API page with a date and a transition period rather than applied without notice.

Liability, and the limits of it

Everything here is provided as is and without warranty of any kind. We verify figures against the authorities that publish them and record the date; we do not warrant that they are correct, current, or suitable for your situation.

We are not liable for any loss arising from use of the site, the API or the widget, including decisions made on the basis of an estimate. This is the ordinary position for a free planning tool, and the disclaimer page explains why knowing what is not modelled is what makes an estimate usable.

Nothing here excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded.

The site links to external sources — IRS documents, state departments of revenue, the Census Bureau. Those are cited so you can verify our figures, and we are not responsible for their content or availability.

These terms are dated as published. Where a jurisdiction and governing law need to be specified for a commercial arrangement, that is settled in the arrangement itself; the site is operated from Spain.
